# Manage POS devices

Add, update, and search POS+ devices for cloud invocation, and view terminal diagnostics.

## Overview

Cloud invocation uses the same devices and Unity Portal flows as a local POS+ integration. After a device is active, call it through the cloud device API using its `merchantPointOfSaleId` (POS ID).

For cloud invocation, when you add or update the terminal:

- Set **Communication protocol** to `Cloud`.
- Set **Adaptor mode** to `PXP` for the PXP cloud device API. Use `Oracle OPI` for Oracle Opera Cloud (coming soon).

This page covers how to:

- [Add a device](#add-a-device)
- [Update a device](#update-a-device)
- [Search devices](#search-devices)
- [View terminal diagnostics](#view-terminal-diagnostics)

For feature settings such as status packets, DCC, and gratuity, see [Configure device settings](/guides/point-of-sale/pos-plus/cloud/api/configure-settings).

## Add a device

Register a new point-of-sale device and configure its settings.

### Step 1: Add a device in the Unity Portal

To add a POS device in the Unity Portal:

1. In the Unity Portal, go to **Merchant setup > Sites**.
2. Select the site that you want to add a POS device to.
3. Click the **Services** tab.
4. In the *Pos service* row, click **Edit**.
5. Click **New POS**.
6. Choose your settings. For cloud invocation, set **Communication protocol** to `Cloud` and **Adaptor mode** to `PXP` (or `Oracle OPI` for Oracle Opera Cloud).
7. Click **Save** to confirm.

Your device is added to the list of devices and its state is set to . If this is the first device associated with this site, an HMAC key is also generated and displayed in the top left.

### Step 2: Activate the device

To activate a POS device:

1. Set the device's status to by clicking **...** in the *Actions* column and selecting **Pending**.

1. Turn on the device and connect it to the Internet.
2. Open the POS+ app. Your device then sends its serial number to the POS Service, which returns an HMAC used to authenticate it. The device's state changes to .
3. The device automatically downloads the settings that were configured in the Unity Portal.

Your device is now ready to use.

## Update a device

Update an existing POS device's settings.

You can update all settings, except the POS ID.

To update a POS device's settings:

1. In the Unity Portal, go to **Merchant setup > Sites**.
2. Select the site associated with the POS device you want to update.
3. Click the **Services** tab.
4. In the *Pos service* row, click **Edit**.
5. Select the type of settings you want to change.
6. Make your changes. For cloud invocation, confirm **Communication protocol** is `Cloud` and **Adaptor mode** is `PXP` (or `Oracle OPI` for Oracle Opera Cloud).
7. Click **Save** to confirm.

For a description of available settings and defaults, see [Configure device settings](/guides/point-of-sale/pos-plus/cloud/api/configure-settings).

## Search devices

The **Search POS** page lists of all point-of-sale (POS) devices associated with merchant groups, merchants, and sites that you have access to. Each row represents a unique POS device and contains [core device data](#device-data).

You can search by ID or serial number, or use filters to narrow down your results.

Access to PXP's Search POS page is tied to a user's permissions. Certain roles have full access, while others have either limited access or no access at all.

### How it works

To access the page, go to the Unity Portal and click **Terminal admin > Search POS**. You'll see a paginated, sortable list of all POS devices.

From here, you can search in two ways:

- **By ID or serial number:** Start typing a POS ID or serial number. The *Search results* update as you type.
- **Using filters:** Use the drop-downs to filter by device characteristics. You can combine multiple filters and select multiple options per filter.

You can also open a device's settings or change its status by clicking the horizontal dots icon () in the *Action* column.

By default, longer fields are partially truncated to better fit on your screen. If you'd like to view the full field, you can access the autosize function by clicking on the vertical dots (). Autosizing can be applied either to a column (e.g., *Serial number*) or the entire table. Note that this will lead to increased horizontal scrolling.

### Device data

The results table shows these columns for each POS device by default:

| Name | Description |
| --- | --- |
| POS id | The unique identifier of the device. |
| Serial number | The serial number of the device. |
| Device model | The model of the device. |
| Device mode | The mode of the device. |
| Communication protocol | The communication protocol of the device. |
| Cloud status | The cloud status of the device. |
| Merchant group | The merchant group that the device belongs to. |
| Merchant | The merchant that the device belongs to. |
| Site | The site that the device belongs to. |
| Status | The status of a device. |

### Filters

You can refine the device list with organisation filters and POS device filters. Each filter supports multiple selections, and you can combine filters from both groups.

#### Organization

Use the *Organization* filters to limit results to specific parts of your merchant hierarchy:

| Name | Description |
| --- | --- |
| Merchant groups | The merchant group(s) associated with the POS device. |
| Merchants | The merchant(s) associated with the POS device. |
| Sites | The site(s) associated with the POS device. |

#### POS device

Use the *POS device* filters to limit results by how the terminal is configured and run:

## View terminal diagnostics

The **Terminal diagnostics** page shows live health and connectivity information for a point-of-sale (POS) terminal. It combines general device settings with live metrics from the device when it is connected to the cloud. It's useful for cloud invocation because it shows whether the device is connected to the cloud and returning live metrics.

To use live device diagnostics, install app version 261601 or above on the terminal. A PXP employee must also enable the *POS Hub service* for the site associated with the device. After the Hub identity is created in the portal, refresh or restart the app on the terminal so it can connect and return live metrics.

### Device information

#### Status

This table describes the status fields shown on the page:

| Name | Description |
| --- | --- |
| Device status | The lifecycle status of the POS device from general settings.Possible values:- Active
- New
- Pending
- Disabled
- Pending Swap
- Returned

 |
| IP address | The IP address reported for the device. |
| Cloud status | Whether the device is connected to the cloud for live diagnostics.Possible values:- Connected
- Disconnected
- Unavailable

 |
| Last sync | The date and time (UTC) when the device last synced with the POS Hub service. The portal doesn't convert this value to a local timezone. |
| App version | The app version currently running on the device. Live diagnostics require version 261601 or above. |

#### Device metrics

Live metrics are returned from the device when cloud connectivity is available. Until the terminal app has refreshed and connected, this section may be empty or incomplete.

| Name | Description |
| --- | --- |
| Battery | The battery charge level on the device.Possible values:- Low
- Medium
- High

 |
| Free memory | Free memory remaining on the device, in megabytes. Please note that a significant portion of memory is in use and required for the solution to run well. |
| Free storage | Free storage space remaining on the device, in megabytes. |
| Tamper sensor | The tamper status of the device. This only applies to Verifone devices.Possible values:- OK
- Tampered

### View diagnostics

To open terminal diagnostics and confirm live data:

1. In the Unity Portal, go to **Terminal admin > Search POS**.
2. Click the *POS Id* of the device you want to view.
3. Click **Terminal diagnostics**.
4. When the page loads:
  - If the device isn't registered for cloud diagnostics, the page attempts registration automatically.
  - If registration fails, click **Retry**.
  - If registration has just completed, refresh or restart the app on the terminal so it receives credentials and connects.
5. Refresh the browser page, or go to another POS section and return, so the portal reloads device settings.
6. Confirm that **Cloud status** shows *Connected* (or *Disconnected* if the device is offline), that device metrics are present when the device is online, that **Last sync** is populated, and that **App version** is 261601 or above.

Terminal diagnostic information can only be displayed if the device is connected to the Cloud. Otherwise, an error message is shown.
