# Overview

PXP's 3D Secure authentication service provides smart fraud protection that's fully PSD2-compliant and designed to keep things smooth for customers, using frictionless authentication wherever possible.

With PXP's 3D authentication, you can benefit from:

* **Enhanced security:** Reduce the risk of fraud by confirming the cardholder's identity.
* **Regulatory compliance:** Ensure your organisation meets PSD2 requirements, especially for Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).
* **Customer trust:** Boost customer confidence and foster trust by offering a secure checkout.
* **Liability shift:** When successful, 3DS shifts the responsibility for fraudulent chargebacks from you back to the card issuer.
* **Reduced chargebacks:** With added verification, fraud-related disputes drop significantly.
* **Improved conversion rates:** Frictionless authentication reduces disruption during the customer journey.
* **Simplified operations:** Configure endpoints for notifications and manage exemptions easily.

We currently support 3DS 2.2 for Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Diners.

## How PXP ensures PSD2 compliance

Our 3D Secure authentication service is designed specifically to meet PSD2 requirements:

- **SCA compliance:** Multi-factor authentication using customer's device and knowledge/biometrics.
- **Exemption handling:** Evaluate applicable exemptions during authentication pre-initiation.
- **Regulatory alignment:** Built-in compliance with European Banking Authority (EBA) guidelines.
- **Liability protection:** Maintains chargeback liability shift when authentication succeeds.
- **Future-proof:** Adapts to evolving regulatory requirements automatically.

## Authentication types

PXP's 3DS service offers two types of authentication:

- **[Standalone authentication:](/guides/3ds/standalone)** You use the PXP 3DS service to authenticate transactions before processing them through another provider.
- **[Integrated authentication](/guides/3ds/integrated):** You use both the PXP 3DS service and the PXP card service, for seamless authentication and transaction initiation.
You can choose to use just one type or use both.
